Amazon.com The beauty of the South American landscape and of Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Bad Education) gives The Motorcycle Diaries a charisma that is decidedly apolitical. But this portrait of the young Che Guevara (later to become a militant revolutionary) is half buddy-movie, half social commentary--and while that may seem an unholy hybrid, under the guidance of Brazillian director Walter Salles (Central Station) the movie is quietly passionate. Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna, a lusty and engaging actor) set off from Buenos Aires, hoping to circumnavigate the continent on a leaky motorcycle. They end up travelling more by foot, hitchhiking, and raft, but their experience of the land and the people affects them profoundly. No movie could affect an audience the same way, but The Motorcycle Diaries gives a soulful glimpse of an awakening social conscience, and that's worth experiencing. --Bret Fetzer

before he became Che August 28, 2010 Dream's Raven (USA) Leaving aside the fact that this movie was based on the writings of Ernesto "Che" Guevara, it stands on its own as a great film. It tells a classic adventure tale of two friends who decide to travel for the sake of travel with little money and a very loose plan. In this particular story, the journey is started on a junky old motorcycle and takes place in South America. It was humorous at times, but ultimately was about the two men becoming more compassionate and aware of the world around them. The film was inspiring and deeply human, and it featured some great acting and amazing scenery. It becomes even more powerful, though, when you think that the young man portrayed in the film would go on to become one of the most influential leaders in the 20th century.
As authentic as the air you breathe, the leaf you don't crush, the tears you hide... April 23, 2010 Prash Chopra (USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
"Before he changed the world the world changed him"
Philanthropy, adrenaline, passion, love, and breathtaking views. It's a story of what you are not. It's a story of what you don't know you miss, because you never dared to experience it.
It is as authentic as the air you breathe, the leaf you don't crush, the tears you hide. Two friends who take on a trip for fun and adventure. And an year later, they find home in realizing the pretense they had been living all along. They meet hostile boundaries but loving people. They see pain. They live suffering. They fall in love, then come out of it, and then fall again only this time it's with what they really love - compassion, truth, genuine human to human respect.
They dare. They learn. And in just one year, their soul shakes off the prejudices. They are human again.
A must watch. I give it 4.85/5.0!

I love this movie. Especially the DVD package it came in. Visually appealing, with a great amount of extras on the disc. Excellent purchase!
Before Ernesto Guevara Became Che February 27, 2010 Zarathustra (Sacramento, CA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you have seen the movie Che or plan to see it, I highly recommend seeing The Motorcycle Diaries. This film by Brazilian director Walter Salles and starring Gael Garcia Bernal follows Ernesto Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado as they travel 5000 miles in 4 months from their native Argentina to Chile, Peru, Columbia, and Venezuela through spectacular scenery on a beat up motorcycle. We learn much about the character of Dr. Guevara as a young man and his identification with the oppressed indigenous people of South America, especially the lepers he treats as humans, not untouchables.
The movie ends with a line from the famous poem Romance Sonambula by revolutionary Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca: "yo ya no soy yo" (I am no longer myself) to indicate how much this trip changed his perspective on life. Finally, this is an excellent road movie beautifully filmed.
