Product Description
In 1941, bombs drop from the night skies of London, demolishing the apartment Nick Freestone lives in with his mother. Deciding the situation in England is too unstable, Nick's mother sends him to live with his father in Burma, hoping he will be safer living on the family's teak plantation.
But as soon as Nick arrives, trouble erupts in the remote Burmese elephant village. Japanese soldiers invade, and Nick's father is taken prisoner. Nick is left stranded on the plantation, forced to work as a servant to the new rulers. As life in the village grows more dangerous for Nick and his young friend, Mya, they plan their daring escape. Setting off on elephant back, they will risk their lives to save Nick's father and Mya's brother from a Japanese POW camp.
In this thrilling journey through the jungles of Burma, Roland Smith explores the far-reaching effects of World War II, while introducing readers to the fascinating world of wild timber elephants and their mahouts.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book   May 7, 2010

5 out of 5 stars it overrules all of the historical fiction books that I have read so far   January 27, 2010

Elephant Run By: Roland Smith
Genre: Historical Fiction

Elephant Run is about a thirteen year old kid named Nickolas Freestone, Hilltop, a monk who is said to be about 130 years old, Mya, one of the mahouts' daughters, Jackson Freestone, Nick's dad and owner of the plantation, Sergeant Sonji, a sergeant for the Japanese and an old friend of Hilltop, Colonel Nagayoshi, a colonel for the Japanese, and Bukong, a Japanese cook/servant. It was wartime and Nick's house was bombed by the Japanese so Nick's mom decided that London was too dangerous for Nick. To protect him, his mom sent him to Burma to live with his father on his teak plantation. After Nick arrived, the Japanese took his father hostage and throughout the book, Nick and his friends were looking for him. This story took place in 1941 during World War II. The first setting of the book was in London, England and the other setting was in Burma, a country in Southeast Asia. Nick was in search of his father since he loved him and he had heard that he was ill and might die. Nick had help finding his dad from his new friends Mya and Hilltop, a very wise monk. They found Nick's dad by riding on the very rare and hard to train timber elephant named Hannibal, whose mahout or trainer was Hilltop.

My opinion of Elephant Run is that it is a very interesting and different. The reason that it is very interesting is that this book takes place during World War II. Some of the main characters were in search of their fathers or uncles so it is interesting how things changed in just a page flip or a new chapter. Also it is different because some books about war are boring. Roland Smith made this story very interesting and he helped me understand more about world history and lifestyles of the people in Burma. In a part of the book one of the sergeants announced to the commander that "The bunkers are filled to capacity with armaments." He went on to say that, "We're using the hanger for the overflow, but it's a dangerous situation. If one of the pilots or mechanics drops a cigarette, the whole place could explode." The reason this is important to the story is that Magwe, one of the Mahouts, took advantage of the explosives and deliberately blew the whole place up after everyone had left the base. This was a great loss to the Japanese.

I would give Elephant Run a rating of 9.5 out of 10! The only way that I can relate this book to another that I have read is to say that it overrules all of the historical fiction books that I have read so far, including my previous favorite, The Good Liar by: Gregory Maguire. Roland Smith captured my attention throughout the book by making me want to learn what's about to happen next. I highly recommend this book. Readers will be amazed at how Roland Smith describes the places where Nick traveled.

This book by: Roland Smith is about a boy named Nick who lives in London with his mom. Because it is world war 2 there are lots of bombings there. Nick's mom thinks he would be safer living with is dad in Burma. Once he finally adjusts to living in
burma The Japenesse come and take over Hawks nest (nick's dad's plantation). They make nick stay there and his dad go to prisoner of war camp. I would recomend this book to some one who likes adventure and suspense.

An exciting tale of a 14-year-old boy in WWII Burma. When Japanese soldiers invade his father's plantation, Nick is forced to work as a servant and his father is imprisoned in a labor camp. Nick must join forces with others to make his daring escape and save his father. Great for ages 9-14.
